48 / JULY.AUGUST.2018 USICERINKS.COM ASK RINK You have rink questions, RINK has rink answers Send your rink questions to: INFO@USICERINKS.COM We have noticed a change in our ice qual- ity lately and believe that it might have something to do with the city water com- ing into our building. How should we go about testing the water? Water utilities change their sources periodically to maintain an adequate sup- ply of drinking water for their customers, and those sources may have slightly different levels of Total Dissolved Solids (TDS). The easiest and most cost-effective way to test the water at your rink is to purchase a handheld drinking water TDS tester and use it to test the water you use to fill your ice resurfacer. TDS testers can be found on the internet for as little as $15 and will give you fairly accurate results. If the TDS of your ice making water is well over 100ppm, you may want to look at water treat- ment options such as Reverse Osmosis. J I recently changed jobs and the staff at my new rink use the wheel on the front bumper of the ice resurfacer and the plastic plate on the driver's side of the conditioner to guide them along the boards dur- ing the first lap of each ice resur- face. They were trained to do this by a previous manager and won't stop doing it when I tell them it is a bad idea. Please help. The wheel on the front corner of ice resurfacers, no matter what make or model, is not meant to guide the ice resurfacer around the dasher boards, it is there to prevent damage to the boards and resurfacer. Plastic plates and/or wheels attached to the side of a conditioner are also designed to prevent damage. Drivers that "ride" the dasher boards with the guide wheel and conditioner will scratch the facing and kick plate, bend framework, and loosen anchors. Q: Q: A: A: Having your staff complete an IMEO (Ice Maintenance and Equipment Operation) training program will help bring them up to speed on proper operation and care of the ice resurfacer. , The wheel on the front corner of ice resurfacers, no matter what make or model, is not meant to guide the ice resurfacer around the dasher boards, it is there to prevent damage to the boards and resurfacer.
