GOLD AND BLACK ILLUSTRATED VOLUME 28, ISSUE 6 59 BY ALAN KARPICK AKarpick@GoldandBlack.com C omprising our last print issue, as we are as I write, left me to ponder what were some of the best parts of publishing the print edition of Gold and Black Illustrated. There have been many good things, but in the moment, one thing rises above the rest for me: The opportunity to see the other side of Purdue's finest athletes and coaches and making that connection. It's not what they do on the field, but that brief glimpse of a different personality than we might have expected. And the best opportu- nity for me to see that different side has been photo shoots. After all, I knew Stacy Clardie's story on Kirk Barron was going to tell about Barron's light-hearted side. But then, I saw it in person as Barron mugged for Charles Jischke's lens for the maga- zine. It was fun to see one of Purdue's most intense players not take himself at all seriously, if only for a few mo- ments. Markus Bailey's intensity is evident on the cover. But so was his smile and jovial attitude before, during and after the camera clicked. Gold and Black's transition to an all-dig- ital format after this football preview issue will lessen our need for these theme-related shoots, at least on our watch. As we always have, Gold and Black will continue to tell the stories behind Boilermaker sports, focusing maybe a bit more on what we do best: Analysis, recruiting and selected features with a focus on Purdue football and men's basketball. The change will lessen our need to focus on art and in- crease interaction with our community. But we have had our time in the print world and enjoyed it all. Purdue's new in-house magazine Forge, with its first is- sue reaching John Purdue Club members about the time Purdue opens it 2018 season, will carry the torch in print from an in-depth feature story, photo and art perspective. After two decades of producing a Purdue sports publica- tion, I am pleased to have a role with Forge using my experience to help put the pieces together for each issue. So maybe my photo shoot opportunities and the residual mojo I get from them are not completely over for me, who knows? For John Purdue Club members, who will exclusively receive Forge, that story will be told four times a year. But, during this transition, I am pleased that something important will continue for JPC members and non-JPC subscrib- ers: The digital magazine Gold and Black Express 50 times a year. Just check for your e-mail inbox and we promise to keep you up to speed, es- pecially in Purdue's highest-profile teams. After all, you are our community at Gold and Black and we look forward to contnue to serve and interact with you.
