GOLD AND BLACK ILLUSTRATED VOLUME 28, ISSUE 6 62 BY BRIAN NEUBERT BNeubert@GoldandBlack.com I f there's one thing that's been clear about recruiting under Jeff Brohm and his coaching staff at Purdue, it's that they will back down from no one. That has apparent through an un- precedented summer around West Lafayette, one in which Purdue se- cured almost a whole recruiting class worth of commitments before July even hit, in part because of college football's new recruiting cal- endar allowing for summer official visits. As of the end of June, Purdue's 19 commitments matched Mississippi for the most in the country, after a breakneck run in which com- mits came one after the oth- er for a good two weeks straight, for the second time in as many sum- mers under Brohm and staff. O b v i o u s l y, as is the na- ture of recruit- ing, Purdue's summer com- mitment list may wind up proving to be just a rough draft of its eventual signing class, but regard- less, the summer commitment spree was one thing, what may lie ahead another. Purdue already holds a com- mitment from local defensive end George Karlaftis, who was offered by virtually everyone, as well as Rivals.com four-star prospects Marvin Grant and Mer- shawn Rice at safety and wide receiver, respectively. Tight end Kyle Bilodeau is a Virginian who turned down a Virginia Tech of- fer and cornerback Nyles Beverly an Ohioan who earned an early 'A NEW PURDUE' Recruiting at Purdue has transformed under second-year staff Brian Neubert Defensive end George Karlaftis is one of the nation's elite players at his position.
