GOLD AND BLACK ILLUSTRATED VOLUME 28, ISSUE 6 85
THREE THINGS
1
Senior safety Jon-
athan Crawford is
Indiana's top
returning player. He
registered 62 tackles,
eight pass breakups
and one intercep-
tion as a junior and
has started in all 38
career games at his
position since arriv-
ing in Bloomington in
2015.
2
Indiana's quarter-
back competition is
wide open heading
into the fall. Redshirt sophomore Peyton Ramsey (1,252 yards, 10
touchdowns, five INTs) returns after starting four of his nine games
played last year. But Arizona grad transfer Brandon Dawkins, who
played in 22 games for the Wildcats and passed for 2,418 yards and 15
TDs, and four-star 2018 signee Michael Penix Jr. will get a fair shot
as well.
3
While the quarterback position is the biggest question
mark on offense, the defense has plenty of important spots
to fill, too. Both of IU's starting linebacker spots in its 4-2-5
scheme are gone. And it's more than just a loss of experience. Tegray
Scales, a first-team All-Big Ten selection, and Chris Covington ac-
counted for 21.8 percent of Indiana's tackles in 2017. Scales also had
12.5 tackles for loss, two interceptions and six sacks. So the players
who take their place have big shoes to fill.
