AUGUST 2018 THE WOLVERINE 13   INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS 1 Is junior defensive end RASHAN GARY'S ranking on The- Athletic.com college football insider Bruce Feldman's annual "Freaks" List. Feldman reported: "The 6-foot-5 Gary is at the same weight he was at this time last year — 287 pounds — and his 40-yard dash time is the same at 4.57 seconds. His three-cone drill at 6.79 was a touch behind last year's 6.70, although his time this year still would beat every defensive lineman at this year's NFL Scouting Combine. His 4.22 pro agility shuttle time also would top every D-lineman at the combine. Next best was 4.32. Another really impressive feat: his 10-4 broad jump, which was eight inches better than what he did a year ago." Gary checked in at No. 2 on NFL.com's countdown of college football's most freakish athletes, behind Houston defensive tackle Ed Oliver. 4 Is where Michigan athletics ranked on CBS Sports' list of the best overall college sports programs of 2017- 18. The rankings were based on football, men's and women's basketball, and two wild card sports. U-M fin- ished with 453 points — 62.5 for football, 180 for men's basketball, 50 for women's basketball and a combined 160.5 for its two wild card sports (which were not listed). Yahoo! Sports also did a listing of the top overall col- lege athletic departments among the 65 Power Five schools, and U-M checked in at No. 8 on that listing, which was based on average Directors' Cup fin- ish over the past five years (U-M was sixth in the 2017-18 Directors' Cup). "After being outside the top 12 in 2014 and '15, the Wolverines now have finished in the top six three years in a row," Yahoo! noted. 10 Is where Gary was projected to be se- lected in Sports Il- lustrated's 2019 NFL M o c k D r a f t , w h i c h posted July 11. "Gar y hasn't come close to real- izing his potential yet, which opens the possibility that he could well wind up going higher than this," Albert Breer wrote. 20 Football Bowl Subdivision coaches were named to the Bobby Dodd Trophy preseason watch list, including U-M's Jim Harbaugh. The award goes to the National Coach of the Year. 37 Is where incoming Michigan freshman defensive end Julius Welschof ranked on Feldman's "Freaks" List. Feldman reported Welschof can run a 40-yard dash in the 4.6 range, has broad jumped 10-6, can tight-rope backward across a river, do backflips and walk on his hands for 50 yards — all of this at 6-6, 260 pounds. He is one of two incoming freshmen to make the list of 50. 91 Michigan athletes were named Big Ten Distinguished Schol- ars July 10 for their academic achievements during the 2017- 18 school year. Students had to earn a 3.7 grade point average or higher to be honored. The Wolverines' list is comprised of 36 men and 55 women across 26 sports. Rowing led all pro- grams with 11 selections. It's also a new record for U-M, which had set a program best with 78 last year. It's the eighth straight year the school has increased its total. $185,173,187 Is the total amount of revenue the University of Michigan athletic de- partment had in 2016-17, according to USA Today's database released June 28. The school had $175,425,392 in expenses, meaning U-M made $9,747,795 in p ro f i t s. M i c h i g a n had the nation's fourth-highest to- tal revenue, trailing Texas, Texas A&M and Ohio State. OSU, which topped U-M by just $236,415 in revenue, and Michigan were the only two Big Ten pro- g r a m s i n the top 13. M i c h i g a n w a s 1 5 t h in profit na- tionally and second in the Big Ten, behind only Ohio State. — Andrew Vailliencourt By The NUMBERS PHOTO BY PER KJELDSEN
