Michigan Athletics Boast Strong Finishes Across All Sports Michigan athletics took home 12 conference championships and came close to winning national titles in men's basketball (finished second), ice hockey (tied for third), field hockey (tied for third), women's swimming and diving (fourth), wrestling (tied for fourth) and water polo (tied for fifth). Of the school's 29 varsity sports, all but seven qualified for the postseason, and 11 squads posted top-10 national placements. U-M's men's basketball team could be considered the highlight of those 29 teams, advancing to the NCAA Tournament's national championship game before losing to Villanova. Field hockey and ice hockey both had miraculous turnaround seasons, with the former jumping from 12-8 to 21-3, while the latter went from 13-19-3 to 22-15-3. Both teams finished in the top four nationally after losing in the national semifinals.
