NORTHSHOREMAG.COM 128 AUGUST 2018 play B E A C H EDITORS' CHOICE CRANE BEACH, IPSWICH STANDOUT QUALITIES: With bathhouses, bike racks, an open time until sunset, and lifeguards and rangers who can help with transportation for mobility-impaired and challenged visitors, this is a full-service beach—but one with unspoiled views of pure white sand. And National Geographic has ranked this one of the top 10 family beaches in the United States. Kids can spend their summer here and at nearby Castle Hill, exploring nature as part of The Trustees' SummerQuest program. INSIDER TIP: Trails more than five miles long offer up a secret hike, traversing stunning dunes. Be prepared for deep sand, take your sunscreen and brace your- self for summer solitude. FUN FACT: Crane Beach is among the world's most important nesting sites for piping plovers, a threatened bird that was nearly hunted to extinction in the 19th century for its eggs and feathers. 290 Argilla Rd., Ipswich, 978- 356-4351, thetrustees.org READERS' CHOICE CRANE BEACH, IPSWICH C H A R T E R B O A T EDITORS' CHOICE SCHOONER THOMAS E. LANNON, GLOUCESTER STANDOUT QUALITIES: This is an authentic experience, for sure. This 65-foot schooner gives you a real taste of what it was like to sail on a fishing schooner a hundred years ago. In the '90s, as word of this shipbuilding project spread, shipwrights began appearing on the scene, looking for work building the boat. The Schooner Thomas E. Lannon was launched on the evening high tide shortly before midnight on Saturday evening, June 21, 1997. She's been taking boat lovers and curious travelers out on magical public sails ever since. INSIDER TIP: The friendly crew specializes in private charters for weddings, corporate entertainment, team building, birthdays, and more. Consider watching Gloucester's 4th of July fireworks from the boat. But book early, as it sells out. FUN FACT: She is framed with white oak and black locust, from trees grown locally and donated by the Essex County Greenbelt Association and private landowners.
