PEM is one of the North Shore's largest employers. These people work hard to bring the arts to the North Shore, and we benefit by dropping by again and again. INSIDER TIP: Hundreds of regional school visits take place each year. Self-guided group tours for students in grade six or higher are designed to foster critical and creative thinking. Tours develop writing skills, link images with words, illuminate American art and culture, and make connections between art and the larger global community. FUN FACT: PEM launched a new website last year, where you can explore the collection and better plan your visit. 161 Essex St., Salem, 978-745-9500, pem.org READERS' CHOICE PEABODY ESSEX MUSEUM, SALEM F E S T I V A L ( F A L L ) EDITORS' CHOICE HAUNTED HAPPENINGS, SALEM STANDOUT QUALITIES: Salem bars and restaurants have specials on Wicked Wednesdays during Haunted Happenings. INSIDER TIP: Know Salem, but don't really know the new restaurant scene very well? Try an AM Coffee Walk with Salem Food Tours, operating daily daily in October, and enjoy the history/culinary/cultural scene overview. Complimentary coffee/tea, sweet treat, and spice tasting. FUN FACT: Today, members of the modern pagan and witch community have a home in Salem, where Samhain is celebrated each October to recognize the end of the harvest season and the coming of winter. The city's modern witches have the unique opportunity of being able to share their beliefs and celebrations with both locals and out-of-town guests who come to celebrate the Halloween season in Salem.
