SEPTEMBER 2018 ■ 57 Barnette's overthrown pass to Whitted was picked off, ending the upset bid. Stephens managed to play throughout the game and contributed a gutsy 105 rushing yards. Barnette completed 14 of 25 passes for 260 yards, including four completions for 71 yards to sophomore receiver Torry Holt. No. 9 Ohio State 22, NC State 14 (Sept. 18, 2004) The year before, Philip Rivers, Jerricho Cotchery and T.A. McLendon put a scare into more than 100,000 fans at Ohio State's Horseshoe, taking the Buckeyes into three overtimes before falling 44-38. In this return contest, the Wolfpack's first Division I-A game of the post-Riv- ers era, the Wolfpack defense took a star- ring role, holding the Buckeye offense to a school-record five Mike Nugent field goals and a solitary touchdown following a turnover. And that was the problem with the Wolf- pack in its last hosting of a non-conference, top-10 opponent at Carter-Finley Stadium — the Pack, under the direction of redshirt junior quarterback Jay Davis, committed five turnovers, including three interceptions. Trailing just 6-0 before the half, the Wolf- pack was trying to run out the clock when Ohio State's Donte Whitner intercepted a pass and returned it to 24 yards to the Wolf- pack 3-yard line to set up the Buckeyes' only touchdown of the game. On the open- ing possession of the second half, McLen- don lost a pitch from Davis at the 16-yard line, setting up another Nugent field goal. McLendon, who missed the season opener with a strained hamstring, scored the Wolf- pack's first touchdown on an 11-yard run in the third quarter, but Nugent added two more field goals to extend the Buckeye lead to 22-7. After being benched in favor of Mar- cus Stone for one series, Davis returned to throw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Brian Clark to get the Wolfpack within one score with 1:47 remaining in the game. But an onsides kick failed, and the Buckeyes were able to run out the clock for the eight-point victory. ■ www.acleanerworld.com Right the first time or it's free. Hem it. SEW IT. LENGTHEN IT. The Wolfpack limited No. 9 Ohio State to one touchdown and five field goals, but five turnovers proved costly in a 22-14 defeat in 2004.
