Hidden in the foothills of the Pyrenees in southern France,
Collioure is associated with the birth of Fauvism and
was fundamental to the development of Pointillism. The
astonishing colours associated with the Fauves and the
divisionist technique explored by the Pointillists, all found
expression in paintings of Collioure and the surrounding
landscape. This made the town a hubbub of artistic activity.
Martin's Collioure works move on from the tighter pointillist
brushstrokes of his earlier Marquayrol paintings and
celebrate the dazzling colours that surrounded him there.
During the 1920s and 30s Martin produced a series of works
from Collioure that are now considered some of the most
daring and vibrant of his career. Examples from this body of
work can be found at the Musée Toulouse Lautrec, Albi and
Musée de Cahors Henri-Martin, Cahors. Martin's return
to the same landscape reflects his deep affinity with the area
and the wealth of inspiration it provided.
