fan forum Right Idea, Wrong Fit In what has otherwise been a magical fall, the lone troubling footnote is Notre Dame's imminent membership in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Father Edward Sorin conquered the snows of the Midwest to establish Notre Dame in northern Indiana. He did not cross the Delaware, and even with the maps of the mid-1800s he would have undoubtedly recognized South Bend is not on the eastern seaboard. Notre Dame's least interesting games over the years have been with eastern teams, with the exception of Penn State. The prospect of five games annually with the ACC is less than scintillating. It is time to give up football independence and, quite frankly, no decent league should accept us unless we join it in all sports the league offers. Instead of continuing with our best rivalries, which are from the Big Ten, and adding teams like Ohio State and Wisconsin, we are now looking at matchups with uninspiring foes like Duke, Wake Forest and Virginia. Notre Dame does not load up on patsies like most conference schools do at this time, but we do have our share of dull games that usually are contests against eastern teams. To be committed to five ACC games a year will do little to create much excitement in October and November, already months where there is a wane in the schedule after we finish with the Michigan schools and get ready for USC. I'm sure Notre Dame has found many ways in which the ACC is a "good fit." But it's not much of a fit for
