with win at No. 1 UConn

ith the graduation of three
starters/mainstays from the
past two NCAA Championship finalists, Notre
Dame was projected to
take a step back to Sweet
16 — maybe Elite 8 —
level this season.
The memo never
reached head coach
Muffet McGraw's Fighting Irish, who climbed to
No. 2 in the Associated
Press poll Jan. 7 after a
thrilling 73-72 victory at
Connecticut two days
earlier in front of 10,127
spectators and a national
television audience. The
Irish then improved to
13-1 with a 75-71 overtime victory at South
Florida Jan. 8.
Two free throws by senior All-American point
guard Skylar Diggins
Junior guard Kayla McBride, who led the team in scoring (15.4 points
per game) during its 13-1 start, tallied a career-high 21 points in the
victory over the top-ranked Huskies.
