the Groundsman January 2013 FACILITY DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION 35 Machinery matters Cricket will continue throughout the build process The new Southern grandstand under construction accommodate winter sports. Reinforced Santa Ana turf will be laid to ensure the ground is ready in early October." Pitch planning Damian has for the past 18 months or so been part of the team charged with detailing the pitch reconstruction. The outfield, he says, will be completely flattened with a 150mm gravel layer, then a 300mm sand layer will be put down, on which a reinforced Santa Ana sod will be laid. The outfield will then be oversown (in late February/early March) with ryegrass to accommodate AFL in the cooler months. t About £2m of the redevelopment cash is, however, being invested in the creation (by contractor Strathayr) of the new playing surface at the stadium, plus the reconstruction of the stadium's adjacent Number Two ground, as Damian explains: "The existing playing surface will be removed in late March and will be replaced with a reinforced surface with drop-in pitches, for the 2013/14 Ashes season onwards. The outfield's loam profile with Santa Ana couch grass will be replaced by a new sand profile and incorporate new irrigation and drainage systems to Damian Hough Toro mowers are mostly used by Damian and his team; three 5510s, one 5200, two 223Ds plus seven pedestrian cylinder mowers. Importantly, the team has been using Bernhard Angle Master 1000 and Express Dual 2000 grinders for the past two years to keep the mower cylinders in shape: "They are critical in maintaining the standards I expect," says Damian. "With Bernhard's help we set up a grinding programme, since the priority is to have sharp reels at all times. In fact, we noticed the difference straight away – the clean cut meant we don't lose as much moisture. Our mechanic does a great job, and if we do need help, Bernhards are only a 'phone call away."
