NOVEMBER 2018 THE WOLVERINE 15 INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS FIVE YEARS AGO, 2013: Michigan found themselves fighting for their lives for a November win in 2013, and found one in a 27-19, triple- overtime battle at Northwest- ern Nov. 16. QB Devin Gard- ner scored the game-winning touchdown on an option play and followed it up with a two- point conversion run. The Wolverines' defense then stonewalled the Wild- cats in their attempt to tie, af- ter the teams played to a 9-9 standoff in regulation. Nor thwestern and Michi- gan swapped touchdowns in the opening overtime, then matched field goals in the second one, setting up the final showdown in the third extra session. Brady Hoke's team almost didn't make it to overtime at all, needing a last-second field goal just to tie the game at the end of regulation. Placekicker Brendan Gib- bons blasted the game-ex- tender from 44 yards out, af- ter the Wolverines' field goal team scrambled onto the field just in time to get it off. The win evened Michigan off at 3-3 in Big Ten play. "The last play of regulation is a play that a lot of teams may not follow through and be successful," Hoke said. "That tells you about the discipline of these guys playing to- gether, how they got on the field, how the guys that weren't on that team got off the field. It might be the best single play I've ever seen." "Coach Hoke said hurry, hurry up, hurry up," Gibbons recalled. "We ran in and said where's Drew [Dileo, Michi- gan's holder]? He slides in there. [Long snapper Jareth] Glanda does a nice job with a wet ball. "Drew did a great job putting it down, and it's my job to make the kick. It happened." 10 YEARS AGO, 2008: Michigan snapped a five-game losing streak while rising up for a football road win in Minnesota Nov. 8. The Wolverines went home with the Little Brown Jug after handling Minnesota, 29-6. Michigan's defense absolutely domi- nated the Gophers, allowing a mere 188 total yards. Meanwhile, placekicker K.C. Lopata tied a U-M record for field goals in a game with five, connecting from 44, 34, 26, 48 and 23 out to give the Go- phers the boot. U-M scored one of its two touch- downs late in the first half on an eight- yard touchdown pass from quarter- back Nick Sheridan to wide receiver Greg Mathews, giving the Wolverines a 16-0 halftime lead. Fullback Mark Moundros capped the scoring on a three-yard touchdown run with just 34 seconds left in the game. "Not all our problems were solved today," Michigan head coach Rich Rodriguez said. "We still got 'em. But at the same time, if we play and exe- cute for four quarters, we can have some success." Michigan's players expressed relief that they were able to overcome and put a win on the board. "Obviously, we don't have the best record, and we've stumbled in the past," corner- back Morgan Trent said after- ward. "I'm really proud of the way we came out. We really played together and had fun." 25 YEARS AGO, 1993: Michigan absolutely shocked No. 5 Ohio State in Michigan Stadium, running over them in a 28-0 shutout Nov. 20. The Wolverines extended their dominance over the Buckeyes to a 5-0-1 streak with the win, rushing for 281 yards. Tyrone Wheatley raced away for 105 yards, and U-M picked off four OSU passes in the first half alone. Wheatley didn't play in the second half, but Ed Davis tack- led on 96 rushing yards for the Wolverines. Meanwhile, the Buckeyes collectively rushed for only 58 yards, the Michi- gan defense making life mis- erable for OSU quarterback Bobby Hoying. Ohio State head coach John Cooper didn't hide his level of disappointment afterward. "It's the most embarrassing game I think I've ever been associated with since I've been coaching college foot- ball," Cooper said. "We got outplayed every way possible." Michigan head coach Gary Moeller enjoyed the win, but delivered a hint of regret even amid the celebration for his 7-4 squad. "It was probably our lack of success during the season that helped in our victory," Moeller said.
