Steele Takes TiJuana Cameron Steele and the Desert Assassins win overall, with top ten finishers posting incredibly fast lap times By Dan Sanchez Photos by Get Some photo A new format and a course that changed before the race, wasn’t enough to hinder the determination of one of SCORE’s veteran Trophy Truck racers, Cameron Steele. Steele and his team, the Desert Assassins are well-known and respected racers among the ranks of the SCORE Trophy Truck class for being one of the most consistent and determined teams the sport has seen since they first started Baja racing in 2005. Steele and the Desert Assassins have led many races and for one reason or another, have come up short of winning, but on Sunday, September 23rd Steele managed to have the fastest combined lap times to win Overall at the Lucerna Hotels & Resorts Tijuana 22nd SCORE Desert Challenge. During the first day of racing that involved running two of a combined four laps, (Saturday September 22nd) Steele scorched through the tough 33.7-mile course in Tijuana, Mexico to lead the SCORE Trophy Truck division, and overall, at the end of the day. “The course was tricky and with these SCORE Trophy Trucks, you have to go fast,” said Steele. “I was trying to protect the truck and tires. I had to be a smart racer because it was gnarly.” Steele posted the fastest lap time of any vehicle during the competition, 49:37 on his first lap and ran 50:15 on his second lap. On the following day of competition (Sunday September 23rd), Steele started last in the pack of SCORE Trophy Trucks but managed to complete the course with a first lap time of 51:24, followed by a 50:19 second lap, which put him in first place. When Steele in the number 16 Monster Energy Desert Assassins truck pulled up to the finish line, he was told by his team that he was fastest on the course, but didn’t know if it was official. “Our timing showed us winning but I’m not sure,” Steele told SCORE announcer Rat Sult. It didn’t take long for Jackson Motorsport’s Executive Director Frank DeAngelo, to walk up to the finish line and hand Steele the BFGoodrich Tires 1st Place cap, and soon after SCORE officials announced Steele was the official race winner. Steele mentioned he was out on the course racing for his dad who recently passed. “I think of him often when I’m out there racing,” said Steele on the podium. “I’m thankful to God who keeps us all safe as we race. I want to say thank you to everybody who makes it possible for us to race.” Top Ten Post Fast Times Finishing second Overall at the Lucerna Hotels & Resorts Tijuana 22nd SCORE Desert Challenge, Rob MacCachren’s Rockstar Energy Team with Justin Smith behind the wheel. MacCachren had just competed in a short course race and asked Smith to drive in order for the team to successfully remain in the lead for a 2018 SCORE World Desert Championship. The Rockstar Energy team finished first at the SCORE San Felipe 250 and again at the 50th BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Baja 500. According to Smith, MacCachren and Jason Voss are scheduled to compete at the 51st SCORE Baja 1000 in November to hopefully take that win and the 2018 Overall and SCORE Trophy Truck Championship all at once. Finishing third within the SCORE Trophy Truck division at the Lucerna Hotels & Resorts Tijuana 22nd SCORE Desert Challenge, was Chris Miller and Jimmy Nuckles driving their Toyota Tundra SCORE Trophy Truck, followed by Zack Langley who finished fourth in class and Tim Herbst who finished in fifth. Dickerson’s average speed and overall lap times (3:26:51) were faster than three of the top 10 finishers in the SCORE Trophy Truck division and was only 36-seconds behind the Rockstar Energy Team. Matt Winslow finished second in Class 10 and sixth overall Dickerson wasn’t without tough competition in his class, however, as Matt Winslow in the number 1081 car finished second in class and was only less than two minutes behind Dickerson which placed him sixth in the race overall. J.J. Schnarr and Roberto Romo in the number 1062 car finished third in class and eighth overall, followed by Miguel Tornel in the 1018 car and the number 1049 car of Ty Goode and Steve Hext who finished 10th overall.
