w o m e n s b a s k e t b a l l fatigue kicks in BY KYLE CHARTERS KCharters@GoldandBlack.com Iowa 62, No. 12 Purdue 46 Jan. 20 Carver Hawkeye Arena Playing its third game in a seven-day stretch, the first of which was a triple overtime win, Purdue looked fatigued. Add in a little sickness thats bounced around a few players, and its little wonder the Boilermakers fell behind early at Iowa and never recovered. Iowa took a 17-3 lead in the first 12 minutes, before Purdue hit its second field goal. And the Hawkeyes were ahead 41-18 at the break. It definitely looked like this was our fourth game in seven days, Coach Sharon Versyp said during her postgame radio interview. When you have three overtime games, and KK (Houser) you saw on her on the sidelines she got very sick. And April (Wilson) didnt practice. It is what it is. They beat us very badly in the first half. Key Player Purdues seeking better bench production of late, and it got some vs. Iowa, when Taylor Manuel came off the bench to grab a career-high 12 rebounds with six points. FLASH FORWARD Opponent: Northwestern Location: Mackey Arena When: 8:30 p.m., Thursday Notables: Northwestern is 9-9 overall, 1-4 in the Big Ten, but the Wildcats are coming off perhaps their best win of the season, a 62-58 victory at Illinois on Sunday. NU has won only two road games in seven chances this season, the other being at Boston College. Five players average between 9.8 and 15.1 points per game, with senior forward Kendall Hackney leading the way. Purdue leads the series 43-19 and has won 29 of 32 dating back to 1997. This is the only meeting between the two schools this season. Tom Campbell Courtney Moses was Purdues only double-figure scorer at Iowa, finishing with 11 points. But otherwise, the Boilermakers didnt get much production; Courtney Moses was the only player in double-figure scoring, leading Purdue with 11 points. Key Stretch It was evident early that the Boilermakers werent right. In the last week, Drey Mingo, Wilson and Houser had battled flu-like symptoms; between that and the heavy workload, Purdue looked slow to react and its shots werent falling. Purdue used a 13-3 run midway through the second half to get to within nine, but Iowa quickly responded, pushing the lead back into the teens. Key Stat The Boilers shot less than 25 percent in the first half and 31.8 percent overall hit only 3-of-18 three-pointers and made just one of its six free throw attempts. Every (shot) was short, Versyp said. We just werent as fluid and youve got to set the tone on defense. No. 12 Purdue 75, Minnesota 67 Jan. 17 Mackey Arena Purdue likely played its best offensive game against the Golden Gophers, certainly in terms of efficiency. Despite that, the Boilermakers didnt put Minnesota away until a run early in the second half, which gave them a double-digit cushion that spanned nearly until the final buzzer. Key Player Sam Ostarello continued her hot stretch, recording a doubledouble for the third straight game, a first for Purdue since 2009. She had 19 points and 14 rebounds, bringing her totals to 58 points, 52 rebounds and 11 blocks during a three-game stretch. And shes doing so despite a sore right shoulder. I think shes living up to her billing coming out of high school, Minnesota coach Pam Borton said. She was one of the top high school players in the country and is having a great year. Shes extremely athletic and I dont think theres anything she cant do out there on the floor. Key Stretch Despite having three players with three fouls in the first half, Minnesota trailed only 38-33 at the break, and it scored the first bucket of the second. But Purdue responded with a 13-3 run. First Courtney Moses hit a triple, then later she and Houser found Manuel for back-to-back layups.
