This Week In Purdue History

It was a long afternoon for West Virginia coach Bob Huggins as he endured a 27-point loss to
Purdue Saturday. The margin was the second-worst Huggins has sustained since returning
to his alma mater as head coach in 2007-08.
Jan. 22, 1977 No. 19 Purdue survived its annual road trip to Michigan. It upended Michigan State
76-70 in Jenison Fieldhouse against first-year Spartan coach Jud Heathcote. Two days earlier, the Boilermakers, under fifth-year coach Fred Schaus, took No. 5 Michigan to the wire before losing 82-76 in Crisler
Arena. When the dust settled, the Boilermakers, led by fifth-year senior guard Bruce Parkinson, became
just the second team in school history to play in the NCAA Tournament.
Jan. 23, 1991 Thanks to an excellent game by freshman Linc Darner, the Boilermakers upended No.
22 Michigan State 62-51 in Mackey Arena. Darner scored 16 points in 35 minutes and was part of a defensive effort that slowed Spartan standout Matt Steigenga, holding him to four points. Michigan State star
Steve Smith had to work for his 20 points, and the victory came in very handy as the Boilermakers were an NCAA bubble team for much of late February and early March.
Jan. 23, 2008 The upstart Boilermakers turned a few heads by routing Penn State 6442 in Happy Valley. The 22-point spread is rare in conference play on the road. The unranked
Boilermakers were led by freshman Robbie Hummels 15-point, 11-rebound, five-assist performance as the visitors exploded to a 39-18 lead at intermission.
