m e n s b a s k e t b a l l boilermakers extend winning streak to three BY BRIAN NEUBERT BNeubert@GoldandBlack.com PURDUE 79, WEST VIRGINIA 52 Jan. 19 Mackey Arena Purdue expected its meeting with West Virginia to be a grueling one, a game the Boilermakers would have to grind to win. In reality, it wasnt easy; the scoreboard said otherwise. I dont know if it surprises us, guard Terone Johnson said. We just did everything we were supposed to do, I think, and if we keep on doing that were going to continue to get better. The Boilermakers shot 49 percent for the game just under 54 in the second half and made 8-of-11 three-pointers, led by the 4-of-6 long-range shooting D.J. Byrd used to score a game-high 17 points. Purdue dominated the rebounding column 24-13 in the second half after being down one at the break. FLASH FORWARD Game: Michigan Location: Ann Arbor, Mich. (Crisler Arena) When: 7 p.m., Thursday Notables: The 17-1 Wolverines are ranked No. 2 in this weeks AP poll, their only loss coming in a narrow one at Ohio State. ... Tim Hardaway Jr. is coming off a 21-point game at No. 9 Minnesota that earned him Big Ten Player-of-the-Week honors. ... All-America candidate point guard Trey Burke averages 18 points and 7.2 assists. ... Freshman Nik Stauskas is shooting just under 50 percent from three-point range. Michigan shoots 41 percent as a team. ... Classmate and Purdue legacy Glenn Robinson III averages 12.1 points and a team-high 5.8 rebounds. ... Purdues won its last two trips to Ann Arbor and three of its last four. ... This will be Purdues first game of the season against a top-10 team. Tom Campbell Anthony Johnson was key to the Boilermakers victory over West Virginia. With Ronnie Johnson in foul trouble, Anthony Johnson came off the bench to score 12 points without a turnover as Purdue cruised to a near-30-point win. But it was defense that won this game for the Boilermakers, though judging by the tone of Coach Bob Huggins afterward, the Mountaineers have some issues on offense. West Virginia made only 29 percent of its shots. Its 17 turnovers were more damaging than they were numerous. But it was Purdues own giveaways that marked one of the few bumps in an otherwise dominating performance. We felt like we were keeping them in the game, Terone Johnson said. Theyre a really good team and they played really hard, and we feel like we matched that. Rapheal Davis needed to just six shots to score 16, most of them in the second half. Anthony Johnson scored 12 and didnt turn the ball over in 20 minutes, squelching any cause for worry that might have come with Ronnie Johnson getting in early foul trouble. Terone Johnson added 11. GoldanDBlack express volume 23, express 18 7
