New Beginnings Painter joined Colgate for Starr Rink's final four years and got to see everyone embrace the Class of 1965 Arena. The building pays tribute to the university's history while simultaneously offering fresh advantages. Visitors can pass time between periods taking in former players' jerseys who've gone pro, and old trophies in the fan entryways. With new fan sidelines, a scoreboard, a video board, and office suites, the features that weren't there before blow Painter away. "It's beautiful. There's a beautiful video board where we're able to do a lot of promotions, advertising through that board. You know it came in on time and under budget or on budget," Painter adds. "So yeah, it's definitely the star of our athletics department, no question about it." The facility serves student athletes of all stripes. Raiders men's and women's hockey programs and the school's indoor soccer and lacrosse teams all have training ammenities, coaches' offices and locker room space. The old Starr Rink building now hosts basketball practices. "This building took a lot of work with a lot of people to get it to completion, and you know, it's paying off. It's really paying off, not just for hockey either, but for all of our programs," says Painter. "It's provided a good foundation, a good vibe for the department as a whole." The new arena was one of several reasons Jenna Jorgensen joined the Colgate staff. The history and supportive community also drew her in. The assistant director of athletic communications moved to New York after USICERINKS.COM NOVEMBER.DECEMBER.2018 / 19 "THE ATHLETES THAT ARE COMING HERE KNOW THERE'S A COMMITMENT TO HOCKEY AND A GREAT PLACE TO GET A GREAT EDUCATION. YOU KNOW, LOOK WHAT YOU'RE GOING TO BE PLAYING IN EVERY DAY. I THINK THEY CARE ABOUT THAT STUFF." Trophies, jerseys and large photos grace the entryway to provide the new rink with some historic flare.
