The investigation report is issued by a Provincial Safety Manager and published in accordance with the Safety Standards Act. The date of this incident was Oct. 17, 2017. The report was issued July 25, 2018. O N OCTOBER 17, 2017 A RAPID RELEASE OF AMMONIA OCCURRED WITHIN THE MECHANICAL ROOM AT THE FERNIE MEMORIAL ARENA and resulted in estimated concentrations of ammonia exceeding 20,000 PPM. Three people were in the room at the time of the release and were found deceased. The incident resulted in a local state of emergency for the community and an evacuation of the area around the arena. Following the incident, Technical Safety BC conducted an investigation to determine factors that contributed to the ammonia release.
