48 / NOVEMBER.DECEMBER.2018 USICERINKS.COM ASK RINK You have rink questions, RINK has rink answers Send your rink questions to: INFO@USICERINKS.COM Our header trench runs along the outside of our rink and crosses the ice resurfacer gates. We get a lot of ice buildup over the metal cover. Other than using hot water to melt out this area, is there an alternative? We asked around and found that a variety of rinks have tried different things, but the general consensus on a cost-effective way of doing this is to use carpet-drying fans angled away from the ice surface across your metal threshold. The air movement prevents ice from building up and helps keep the area dry and slip free. Several rinks mentioned that it was important to make sure the air wasn't cycling towards the rink since it would burn out your playing surface. There seems to be more and more technology for rinks to help us save money and energy consumption. How do I determine what's fact and what's fiction? Do your due dili- gence! Any com- pany that claims they can save you X or pro- vide Y should be able to provide the hard numbers and scientific data behind their claims. In addition, ask for a list of rinks that are using their product and call them yourself. Most importantly, make sure you are comparing apples to apples. A three-pad facility that saved X might not translate into the same savings for your single sheet. J Q: Q: Q: A: A: COOL FUN FOR THE ENTIRE FAMILY!
