62 THE WOLVERINE DECEMBER 2018 BY AUSTIN FOX T im Hardaway Jr. had by far the best year of his ca- reer in 2017-18 with the New York Knicks, setting new ca- reer highs in scoring (17.5 points per game) and games started (54). He's on pace to outdo those numbers this season. Hard- away has turned into the Knicks' best player, leading the club in both scoring (23.2) and minutes played (32.2) in the early going. He has scored at least 24 points in eight of the 13 contests he has participated in this season, including three where he posted 31 or more. Knicks head coach David Fizdale spoke Oct. 31 about the progress Hardaway has made, and how he can get even better. "It started in the summer," Fizdale told NorthJersey.com. "His commit- ment to the conditioning and im- proving in the areas I saw could take him to another level, with a lot of them not being technical things. He's really been a consistent leader and an effort guy every day here in practice. I'm not surprised it's happening for him in a game. "I'm proud of Tim. He knows this is going to be an up and down year for us, a growing year, but what he's trying to figure out is how to become a star and what the responsibility is for that. That's why I'm really on him about defending. I think you can see he's competing. "Yes, we suffered a few times be- cause I trusted him, but I think it's go- ing to pay off in the end. What you see is what you get with him right now." The NBA CARIS LEVERT SUFFERS SCARY INJURY Caris LeVert experienced a scary- looking injury in the waning seconds of the second quarter of a 120-113 loss at Minnesota Nov. 12. LeVert at- tempted to block a shot near the rim in transition, but came down awk- wardly on his right leg, and imme- diately buried his head in his hands once he saw how severe it was. The Ohio native had to be taken off the court on a stretcher, and was trans- ported by ambulance to a hospital for further evaluation. The next day, he was diagnosed with a subtalar dislo- cation of his right foot. There were no fractures and only moderate ligament damage. As a result, it will not require surgery, which will allow him to re- turn at some point this season. The third-year pro had gotten off to the best start of his young career. He scored at least 19 points in nine of the club's first 11 games, including four in which he tallied 26 or more. Through 14 outings, he was aver- aging 18.4 points, 4.3 boards and 3.7 assists in 29.7 minutes per contest.
