SCORE BAJA 1000 EXHIBIT SCORE Fans Get Their First Look At The 51st SCORE BaJa 1000 During The 2018 Lucas Oil Off-Road Expo By Dan Sanchez Photography by Get Some Photo and Dan Sanchez The beginning of the Fall season for off-road fans means it’s time for the off-road industry’s of the largest show, the Lucas Oil Off-Road Expo powered by General Tire. The annual event attracted an estimated 50-thousand people who came to see hundreds of off-road manufacturers displaying the latest products for trucks, UTVs, and Jeeps. While there’s a lot to take in at the Off-Road Expo, one of the main attractions is the SCORE Baja 1000 feature exhibit that showcases racing, excitement, teams, and drivers who participate in the world’s most iconic off-road race, and the show’s most attended annual press conference. The SCORE Baja 1000 Exhibit had a variety of vehicles on display, including the Geiser Bros.- built AXALTA Motorsport’s SCORE Ram Trophy Truck that will be racing under SCORE veteran Joe Bacal with Jeff Geiser sharing the driving duties. This truck is part of a new race campaign by the global coating company, that was announced by Wade Robinson, Managing Director of Axalta Motorsports, Americas. “Our paint systems look great and are tough and durable … perfect for a race in the desert. There are perhaps no better proving grounds for our products and no better way to express our passion for racing,” said Robinson during the announcement at the SCORE Baja 1000 Exhibit. In addition to the AXALTA SCORE Trophy Truck, SCORE fans could see the 232x motorcycle from the Warrior Built Foundation, Terrible Herbst Motorsports SCORE Trophy Truck of Troy Herbst and Christian Sourapas, Brenthel Industries’ number 61 SCORE Trophy Truck driven by Richard Armstrong, Fenix Motor’s all-electric open-wheel race car driven by Raul Rodriguez Jr, Marc Burnett’s Can-Am UTV, Brian Chachua’s vintage SCORE championship Jeep, and SCORE’s ‘black beauty’ pre-runner. Aside from seeing these vehicles close-up, Off-Road Expo attendees also had an opportunity to meet with SCORE racers who were signing autographs for fans all weekend. Some of the racers attending included, SCORE champions and racing icons including Larry Roeseler, Ivan Stewart, and Robby Gordon. Also in attendance were racers such as Class 10 Champion Broc Dickerson, former race champion Mark Stahl, Cody and Shelbi Reid, and more. It’s All About The Course Racers and fans also come to the SCORE Baja 1000 Exhibit to attend the reveal of the SCORE Baja 1000 course. SCORE CEO and president Roger Norman announced the course for the 51st running of the race and handed out copies to everyone. Attendees discovered that the course stretches across 806.76 miles of Baja desert terrain, and was again designed by SCORE Race Director Jose A. Grijalva. The course will begin and end in Ensenada, Mexico and will travel in a clockwise direction east to Ojos Negros before reaching both the east and west sides of the Baja peninsula. After Ojos Negros, the course heads out to Jamaul where there is a new section of trail that has never before been used, just before the Goat Trail. From there the course heads to Kiliwas and out to Hwy 3 to San Matias, then over to the desert in San Felipe. South of San Felipe it loops around Amarillas Wash and comes back to Old Puertecitos Road on Huatamote Wash. Racers will then head south to the Sulphur mines and turn right and loop back using Matomi Wash to Old Puertecitos Highway. South from Puertocitos to Gonzaga Bay and before Coco’ s Corner, the course turns south and takes a new trail that will take racers back to the main road out to Chapala. There the course goes across Hwy 1 and does a loop behind Cataviña where racers face silt and difficult hill climbs. North of Cataviña the course goes back across the peninsula on the east side of Hwy 1 and heads north to Rancho Victoria. It then drops down to El Rosario Wash and goes north to San Quintin on a fast smooth road that has never been raced on. From there, the course runs north and hits the coast to Santo Tomas, taking pavement to Uruapan and back to Ojos Negros and to the finish in Ensenada. The five checkpoints will be located north of San Felipe (race mile 177.34), before Highway 1 on Chapala Road (rm 378.27), Highway 1 in San Quintin (rm 597.81), end of Vicente Guerrero Wash (rm 633.85) and in Santo Tomas before Highway 1 (rm 733.02). Because of the horrendous silt beds, Class 11 (stock VW sedans) and all Sportsman 4-wheel vehicles classes will be allowed to eliminate the Cataviña loop, taking pavement from rm 379.22 to rm 478.38. While the excitement of the 51st SCORE Baja 1000 continues to build, SCORE fans look forward to an exciting race that sets the stage for those who will race hard to win, and others who will make 2018 their championship season.
