"It's gotten much bigger than we anticipated," Bandereck says. When Bandereck first decided to pursue a career in baking, her parents were less than thrilled. At their encouragement, she attempted a conventional college career, but it didn't take. She ended up enrolling at Johnson & Wales University in Rhode Island to study baking and pastry, and it was there that she met her future husband. After graduation, the pair entered the hotel industry, working for big-name players across the country and eventually settling down for eight years in Arizona. When they started having children, though, they decided to head back to the East Coast. Chris accepted a transfer to Boston and the growing family moved to Topsfield. Bandereck started her business out of her home in the late 1990s, baking wedding cakes and other treats for individual customers. She depended mostly on word-of- mouth to build her clientele, and continued with this model for more than 10 years. But then, with her three sons all in high school and college and more independent, she decided the time was right to expand her business, baking bigger orders for venues and catered events. Friends and advisors told her to open up shop in Boston.
