With our first snowstorm on the horizon as I write this letter, I can't help but get excited for the winter wonderland our region will become. It's time for sipping eggnog, hanging twinkling lights, enjoying the scent of fresh-cut pine, and gath- ering with family and friends. It is also time to support our local communities. Shopping locally is one way we can bolster our local economy and help our cities and towns thrive. This is also a time to reflect on those in need who have been hit hard by the devastating impact of the gas explosions this past September. If you don't live in the towns of Lawrence, North Ando- ver, and Andover, you might not be aware that many homes are still without gas— meaning no heat and no hot water—and some businesses are still closed or just opening after months of waiting for gas lines to be restored. We urge you to include these towns among your holiday shopping destinations. More than ever local shops need our support. In fact, this issue we highlight the town of North Andover and interview local shop owners who have shown great resilience in this time of crisis. Speaking of shopping locally, we also highlight several North Shore shops selling everything from handsome men's accessories to the latest eyewear to winter trends in women's fashions, as well as shops carrying locally made jewelry. December is a wonderful month to indulge with family and friends, and there is no better way to start off than with choco- late. We visit several local chocolatiers in the region and learn their techniques for producing tasty treats. We also visit some of the hippest mixologists as they share recipes for some of their favorite drinks. And renowned chef and restaurateur Barbara Lynch welcomes us into her Gloucester home this Christmas and offers ideas for a truly festive and delicious dinner party. We hope your holidays are merry and bright! Cheers, HOLIDAY SPIRIT Nancy E.
