WINTER2019
7
Concussions continue to be at the forefront of
player safety, and it's not just in football. Anyone who
manages or interacts with your customer athletes
and participants, regardless of the sport, should have
training. At all times, someone on-duty at your facility
should be trained, including your late-night closer.
All certified USIndoor soccer referees are required
to have concussion awareness training. Referees for
other sports should be similarly trained.
Sexual abuse is perhaps the hottest public
issue at the moment, due in part to a few high-profile
scandals making national headlines and a plethora of
local reports. It is as critical as ever to make sure
your facility is doing the right thing.
• Obtain background checks on ALL employees.
• Make sure you maintain the proper staff-to-
customer ratios for camps, birthday parties, etc.
have their own logs, have them sign yours. Keep your
logs at least three years.
Weather conditions are easy to verify online, but a
simple log can go a long way in terms of verifying a
claim!
Beware of Hazards. If you have areas
prone to falling snow and ice, such as from a roof onto
a sidewalk or parking lot, block them off at the first
sign of risk. Depending on the frequency and danger of
the condition, you may be advised to alter the walkway.
Other Hot Topics
Not all risks are outside the facility. While not specific
to the season, be sure you and your staff are up to
date on concussion awareness and sexual abuse
prevention. There are hot topics right now and will be
for the foreseeable future.
