MINNESOTA HOCKEY NEWS & NOTES LEGACY FUND PUTS FOCUS ON KIDS FIRST Minnesota Hockey, and its newest Grow the Game partner, Sun Country Airlines, launched a new initiative called the Minnesota Hockey Legacy Fund this fall. The Legacy Fund, which has already awarded more than $10,000, was developed by the Minnesota Hockey Board of Directors in an effort to provide grants to individuals, families, organizations or associations in need of financial support to overcome hardships, or in some cases, tragedies. "It is our member families and volunteers that make our community- based model so special, and the Legacy Fund is a way that we can give back to many of those members in need," said Minnesota Hockey President Dave Margenau. "We are so thankful to Sun Country Airlines for their support of this program and their focus on helping as many children as possible fall in love with the game of hockey." Funds remain available for the 2018-19 season. Those wishing to help or support those in their local hockey community may fill out an application by visiting minnesotahockey.org/legacyfund. YOUTH COACHES RECOGNIZED FOR EXCELLENCE Minnesota Hockey, in partnership with Park Dental and the Minnesota Wild, hosted nearly 50 coaches for the Coaching Excellence Award program in Saint Paul this winter. The coaches were recognized for their dedication to youth hockey and provided with the opportunity to watch a Minnesota Wild practice, meet Wild coach Bruce Boudreau and have lunch at Tom Reid's Hockey City Pub. "These coaches give so much of their time, family and work time, to come out and work with these kids, so they probably don't get thanked enough," said Minnesota Hockey Executive Director Glen Andresen. "This is a way to recognize them." Players, parents, officials and other coaches can now nominate coaches for the 2019 Coaching Excellence Award. To nominate your coach, go to minnesotahockey.org/programs. DEVELOPING BETTER ATHLETES & BETTER PEOPLE Minnesota Hockey is proud to partner with the Minnesota chapter of the Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) to ensure that all youth players in Minnesota have a positive athletic experience. PCA, a national non- profit, has been promoting a positive, character-building athletic environment since 1998 and has now impacted more than four million youth athletes. As part of the partnership, Minnesota Hockey associations are able to apply for a financial grant toward a PCA parent work- shop, which is designed to help parents raise winners in life through sports. PCA offers a variety of workshops available to Minnesota Hockey associations including sessions for players, parents, coaches and organization leaders. Associations that partner with PCA can utilize any of the offered workshops but must include at least one parent workshop to qualify for the grant. The parent workshop explores the role of "Second- Goal Parents" and how they can help ensure their children's experience yields healthy, developmental (physical, social, mental) outcomes that will serve them far beyond the playing field. CHEVY WISHES YOUTH TEAMS GOOD LUCK ON DRIVE TO STATE Chevrolet is excited for their sixth consecutive season as the pre- senting partners of the Minnesota Hockey Region and State Tournaments. With "The Drive to State powered by Chevy," Chevy Dealers play a key role in the signature events of youth hockey in Minnesota. "Like the rest of the hockey players and families in Minnesota, we are very excited for the most thrilling time of the hockey season—State Tournament time," said Patrick Johnson, President of the Select Heartland Chevy Dealers. "We wish all of those teams competing for a spot at a Minnesota Hockey State Tournament the best of luck on their Drive to State!" The Drive to State, powered by Chevy, will be highlighted by 14 State Tournaments hosted by nine communities. Region Tournaments will be played March 1 through 3, fol- lowed by State Tournaments being played March 15 through 17. F E B R U A R Y 2 0 1 9 | M H J ON L I N E . C O M 05
