DAZZLING DEBUT The original plan for Michigan heavyweight wrestler Mason Parris, the nation's No. 3 overall recruit coming out of high school, was to redshirt his first year on campus while adding weight to his 240-pound frame. On Jan. 3, that strategy went by the wayside when the Wolverines pulled the big man out of redshirt to make his debut on the road at Oregon State against two-time All-American and sixth-year senior Amar Dhesi, then ranked the No. 1 heavyweight in the nation. Parris proved his coaches made the right call and dominated en route to an 11-4 victory that included three first-period takedowns and 1:31 of riding time. The rookie is now 22-3 overall (since he was pulled out of redshirt he gets credit for his 17-3 record accumulated as an unattached wrestler in open tournaments) and ranked seventh nationally by FloWrestling, as of Jan. 14. In five dual appearances so far, Parris has the win over Dhesi and two pins, including one in his home debut against Illinois Jan. 12 that helped the No. 6 Wolverines to a 28-10 win and its first 6-0 start since 2001-02. U-M is 8-0 heading into its Jan. 25 showdown with No. 2 Ohio State. PHOTO COURTESY MICHIGAN PHOTOGRAPHY THE BIG PICTURE
