Restorer's Profile Hot Rods & Hobbies S By Ashley Majeski Smissen Scott Bonowski, owner and founder of Hot Rods and Hobbies, poses with an orange 1968 Chevy pickup truck that's in progress at the shop. 24 cott Bonowski has taken home some of the custom car industry's most prestigious awards, designed cars for Hollywood celebrities, and even built a custom car for the president of the world's largest hot rodding association in existence. Today, he runs Hot Rods & Hobbies, a successful hot rod and custom car shop that employs 14 people and works on an average of 30 cars at any given time. There's no way to tell by looking around Bonowski's shop that this was not what he originally thought he'd be doing with his life. "I got into this business by accident," Bonowski said. "I was going to college to get a business degree. I was planning to go into architecture. One of the pre-requisite classes I had to take was freehand drawing. The teacher said I didn't do very well, so I left." Hotrod & Restoration January/February 2013 HRR_Jan/Feb13_Pages1-63.indd 24 1/24/13 2:18 PM
