w o m e n s b a s k e t b a l l boilermakers lose two, offense struggles BY STACY CLARDIE SClardie@GoldandBlack.com Michigan 67, No. 13 Purdue 56 Feb. 10 S Mackey Arena The Boilermakers had their lowest turnover total of the Big Ten season (12) but often didnt capitalize on the extra possessions with points. Purdue shot only 38 percent, making only two baskets in the final eight-plus minutes, to doom itself to its first home loss of the season. Michigan hadnt won in Mackey Arena since 1998. Perhaps the Boilermakers could have overcome that shooting drought they were 2-of-15 after Drey Mingos basket gave them a 49-47 lead with 8:35 left but they combined it with breakdowns on defense. Purdue opted for a switching man-to-man against Michigans perimeter-oriented offense in which nearly every player can shoot the three. That should have meant no open looks from the perimeter. But that wasnt the case as Mingo and fellow post Taylor Manuel, especially, appeared to struggle to follow assignments. FLASH FORWARD Opponent: Wisconsin Location: Kohl Center, Madison, Wis. When: 8 p.m. ET Thursday Notables: The Badgers enter the week as only one of three league teams below .500 overall (11-13) and are tied for 11th in the conference at 3-8. Wisconsin has won four of the last six over Purdue, though lost its last meeting 63-52. Junior guard Morgan Paige leads the Badgers in scoring (17.2 ppg) and nearly half of her 338 shots have been from three-point range (29 percent). Wisconsin averages only 59.4 points per game, secondlowest in the league. Cassie Rochel, a 6-foot-4 junior, is No. 5 in the league in rebounding (8.3 pg). pointers, including a four-point play in which Mingo didnt fight through a screen with 8:09 to play. It put Michigan ahead to stay. We cant not show up like this again, especially at home, said senior Sam Ostarello, who had 10 points and seven rebounds. We only have a select number of games left and if we want our season to be where we need it to be, we need to take from this loss and learn from it. We cant do that again. Thats just unacceptable. Key Stretch In the final 5:49, the Boilermakers had only one field goal, and that came with less than one minute to play. While they were stagnant missing on drives, jump shots and three-pointers Michigan was busy cashing in from the free-throw line. The Wolverines made 10 of 12 in that stretch. Key Stat Itd be easy to go with the three-pointers here Michigan outscored Purdue by 21 in that area alone. But the Boilermakers need scorers to emerge in crunch situations, and guards KK Houser and Courtney Moses combined to make only 3-of-16 shots. Key Player Thompson scored 18 of her game-high Tom Campbell 22 points off threeCourtney Moses had been struggling with her shot but found pointers, hitting some her touch against Penn State, making 4-of-5 three-pointers tough shots over and scoring a game-high 21 points in the loss. Purdue defenders but That meant Kate Thompson also getting free off screens to got free to stick 6-of-13 threestick open looks. Feb. 5 S Bryce Jordan Center UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. In the most-anticipated regularseason matchup of the season to date, the Boilermakers stumbled down the stretch to watch a chance for sole possession of first place slip from their grasp.
