NORTHSHOREMAG.COM 36 MARCH 2019 says Rick Parker, president of the Burlington Area Chamber of Commerce. Burlington is also becoming a magnet for cutting-edge research and development. Parker points to the Kostas Research Institute on Northeastern's Burlington campus, which he says "is bringing together academia, research, industry, and govern- ment partners to collaborate on real-world challenges." He adds, "The facility offers unmatched access to research, equipment, tools, and technology that facilitates new innovations and spin-off companies." Parker also notes that MilliporeSigma recently relocated to Burlington in a brand- new, LEED-certified 350,000-square-foot facility. With approximately 70,000 square feet of lab space and roughly 1,100 employees, the new facility is a major North American hub for the life science business of Merck KGaA, headquartered in Darmstadt, Germany. e Burlington campus serves as a multiuse facil- ity for life science and a premier global customer destination with a customer collabo- ration laboratory and training center, applica- tion and development labs, R&D, specialized manufacturing, the North American customer service center, and administrative office space. e move is a result of growth and the consolidation of six Greater Boston area facilities into this new location. Chris Ross, executive vice president of integrated supply chain operations at MilliporeSigma, says the company wanted a location with great existing amenities that was convenient for its employees, customers, and global visitors, as well as one that offered "proximity to some of the best academic research centers and medical establishments in the world." "Burlington was the center point of all that activity," he says. "It really allowed us to retain our great people, and gave us access to what we consider an extraordinary local talent pool here in the Greater Boston area." e medical industry isn't the only place where Burlington shows its health and wellness clout. It's also home to Life Time Athletic Burlington, a brand-new, state-of- the-art "athletic resort" that opened in May 2018 and is so much more than your run-of- the-mill gym. e facility boasts amenities on three floors, including indoor and outdoor pools with water slides, towel service, and a sauna; a full-service spa and salon; a Kids Academy featuring everything from gymnas- tics and dance to Spanish classes; a restau- rant; fitness classes such as yoga, cycling, and strength training; state-of-the-art workout equipment; personal training, chiropractic care, and physical therapy services; a Pilates reformer studio; full-sized squash and basketball courts; and summer camps. "We're creating a new category, and that category is a healthy way of life," says senior general manager Ben Dubin. "Our purpose is to meet the health and fitness needs of all our members. We help our members get healthy and be happy." Parker also says that e Trustees of Reservations is in the process of becoming the manager of Mary Cummings Park in Burling- ton. "e park is among the largest open spaces that remain inside of the 128 beltway," he says. "e park is an additional amenity to residents and health-conscious workers and the businesses looking to attract them." It all adds up to a community that's building a healthy economy, workforce, and future. Parker notes, "Residents and workers in Burlington have immediate access to world- class medical and fitness facilities, restaurants, shopping, personal services, and more."
