NORTHSHOREMAG.COM 34 MARCH 2019 Burlington might be less than 12 square miles in size, but the town packs a lot of power, from its retail and restaurant scene to its role as a hub for business and technology. It's also home to an exciting—and grow- ing—health and wellness industry, from the ever-expanding Lahey Hospital & Medical Center to a brand-new state-of-the-art "ath- letic resort" that's turning the traditional gym concept on its head. Located just 16 miles from Boston at a nexus of several major highways, Burlington has become a great place for many compa- nies to settle and grow. Among them is Lahey Hospital & Medical Center, which moved from Boston to Burlington in the early 1980s. "We have grown rapidly in the time we've been in Burlington," says the hospital's CEO and chief medical officer, David Longworth, MD. "It's a great place because of the community; it's a great place because of the geography." Lahey Hospital & Medical Center not only provides top-notch medical care but is also a boon for the local economy. It employs about 600 physicians and 6,000 nurses, caregivers, and support staff, and it's recruited 150 new physicians and 60 advanced practitioners since August 2017. It's also in the midst of a merger with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center; it opened the Roger L. Jenkins, MD, Transplant Institute in early January; and it's building a new endos- copy center that's scheduled for completion this spring (Lahey performed more than 20,000 endoscopy procedures in 2018, Longworth says).
