NORTHSHOREMAG.COM 74 MARCH 2019 When Nicholas Smith of Danvers was born, his parents, Lisa and David, expected he would be a typically developing boy like his older brother, Joshua. But eventually it was clear that Nicky, as his family calls him, was not meeting developmental milestones. He had a very limited vocabulary and soon stopped speaking altogether. Nicky was diagnosed with autism at age 2, and life as the Smith family knew it would soon change dramatically. After early intervention and attempts at tra- ditional preschool, the Smiths enrolled Nicky in a special needs private school. He did well there for a while, but as he approached his teen years things became progressively worse. Nicky was unable to learn any communication skills and was still not toilet-trained. He began to exhibit challenging behaviors more frequently, and it was apparent that the school could no longer support him. Melmark New England started off in a small office park in Woburn.
