76 MARCH 2019 Around this time, Lisa Higgins-Smith attended a semi- nar at Melmark New England. The Andover-based human services organization was established in 1998 to serve chil- dren and adults with autism spectrum disorder and other intellectual and developmental disabilities. Melmark New England evolved from Melmark, Inc., in Pennsylvania, which was founded in 1966 by the Krentel family. Their daughter was born with Down syndrome, and in that era most children with disabilities were institution- alized. The Krentels had a mission to keep their daughter and others with similar diagnoses closer to home. Dec- ades later, Melmark leadership saw a shift in referrals to The new Clavin Center offers older students and adults the opportunity to learn culinary skills as well as offering parents, staff, and the public educational programs.
