2017 A U G U S T OPENED RINK BREAKDOWN CONCRETE RINK FLOOR LIGHTING IN ARENA LED Arena also has plexiglass, so players in sleds can watch the game while in the benches or penalty box. The facility is one of the relatively few nationwide that offers a special sled hockey-equipped arena. In Fort Wayne, sled players have to sit out on the ice when not playing because they don't have special benches. The building also boasts a suite that groups of up to 24 people can rent out and watch games in, as well as weight and training rooms, a concessions stand and press box. Trine students can take advantage of a free open skate once a month. "It's busy enough that we're thinking about adding another sheet of ice," Ferrell says. "But I don't think that will be in the next three or four years because we use so much of the ice for our own teams that we don't have a whole lot of ice to sell to other people." In the meantime, Thunder Ice Arena will continue giv- ing its fresh, new youth and college programs some love. Staff plan to run their first hockey camps out of the arena this July.
