HOUSE / TECHNO 25 7 www.guestlist.net Issue 48 / 2013 EW VI ER NT I COZZY D This guy likes to keep himself busy, heading up one of Londons hottest parties Crèche and label boss at Lower East Records alongside Lee Brinx, Ed Kane he has paved a reputation as an eclectic and forward thinking music maker. With an exciting year ahead, we look forward to some new music coming from the label and their 3rd Birthday Party with Creche in March. JOE LE GROOVE | guestlist.net What have you been up to? I was in Mexico most of January for BPM festival, I played for the Akbal Music showcase with DJ T, Special Case, WildKats & Robbie Akbal. Was a sick party. I got back a couple of weeks ago, and have been back in the studio finishing some stuff I started before christmas, aswell as just starting some new material. Next week I'm off to Russia, as am playing in St Petersburg. What was last year's best gig? I don't wanna sound I'm like biased or anything, but a couple of the Crèche parties that we did last year that were just phenomenal, really out of this world. Going back to the May one, with Maceo Plex and Art Department, which was just an amazing atmosphere, great vibes all day. That one that really stands out for me. I also really enjoyed playing in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico also in May, at La Santanera. Great intimate vibes and I really enjoyed playing an extended 3 hour set. The crowd kept asking for 'One More' at the end and didn't want to leave. I've known you for a long time, can you tell our readers how your musical journey began? I've always loved music, and grew up listening to all kinds, from Michael Jackson to Nirvana. When I left school and went to college, I started getting into Garage Music. At the time it was the new underground dance sub-genre to hit London. This inspired me to take up DJing, so I decided to get a second hand pair of decks off a friend who was selling his. It all started there really. So you used to work in a record shop? I ended up getting a job in my local record shop, called Loppylugs, probably due to the fact, I was always in there shopping anyway, this was back in 2000. I started getting more and more into House, exploring more deep, tech and progressive stuff. We were predominantly specialists in Garage/ Hip Hop 12"s, although still stocked house too, though in smaller quantities. Really enjoyed working there, just got to listen to music all day, learn about the industry, meet loads of DJs and have first dibs on the under the counter white labels ;) Good days. I remember getting white labels delivered to my house and having a promo, not one that's gone out to 1000 people round the world, only like a 100 people got it, that kind of thing. Yeah music had so much more value back then, you really appreciated owning a copy of something you'd been after for ages. Music piracy was non-existent then. Being exposed to so much more music really helped me mature as a DJ. Lower East, has been making waves since its inception, what have you guys got planned for the label this year? Yeah, we're coming into our 3rd year now. It's been great to see the organic rise. I've just had a release on the label, 'Listen', which includes a remix from Droog. Following this, the very talented Michael Jansons has an EP forthcoming, which will feature an MK Remix, on wax and digital. working some other new material, have about 4 new tracks that need finishing. One of the tracks will feature the vocals of Cari Golden. So should have a couple of EP's ready to go after that. You and Alexis, you guys started Crèche a while ago, I think it's one of the best parties in London. All the lineups really solid every time. What are you going to do with the brand this year? forward to being a part of WeAreFstvl this year. The Line up is ridiculous! If you were not DJing and producing and had to work at one of the following where would it be- Tesco, Boots or Burger King? Probably Boots, everytime I'm in there I seem to spend a fortune, so I wouldn't mind taking advantage of a staff discount! Looking forward to it? We've also signed a remake of Bill Withers 'Aint no Sunshine' by Johnny Mikes, which we're very excited about. It's been completely re-sung by an incredible vocalist called Michael B. The package will feature remixes from Timo Maas, and Alexis Raphael. Well it's our 3rd birthday in March. We're doing Pulse on Easter Sunday. We wanted to do something really special, so we've called it Crèche of the Titans, and we've got Kerry Chandler, Nick Curly, Heidi, Huxley, Darius Syrossian, and Amirali (Live). Sounds good. So you guys are stepping your game up.. We're just trying to be more diverse, as musically we love it all really, so we just want to put out great music from artists we like. We're very excited about the year ahead. As well as that we're really looking If you were banished on a desert island and had to take 3 famous people with you, who would you take?
