Here's a quick look at those sports, including a projection on where each is expected to finish both in the Big Ten and nationally: ROWING First Event: March 30 versus Har- vard and Yale in Belleville, Mich. Big Ten Predicted Finish: Top two NCAA Best-Case Scenario: Top 10 Coach's Expectations: "I think the goal is always to win a Big Ten championship and to win a national championship," head coach Mark Rothstein said. "But the expectation is more focused on just improving each week." To p A t h l e t e : S e n i o r c a p t a i n Meghan Gutknecht leads the Wol- verines after a strong junior season in which she was named a second-team Pocock All-American and first-team All-Big Ten. "She's very tough and she's very competitive," Rothstein said. "She's got a lot of experience. She's just somebody you want in the boat. "It's the kind of person people love to race because they know she's go- ing to put everything she has into the race." Athlete To Watch: Freshman Jes- sica Schoonbee is impressing early on in her Michigan career. "She really had a great training trip, and I think she's doing a really nice job," Rothstein said. Don't Miss: May 19 at the Big Ten Championships in Madison, Wis. MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD First Event: March 15-16 at the Hurricane Invitational in Miami Big Ten Predicted Finish: Seventh NCAA Best-Case Scenario: Qual- ify three to four athletes to NCAAs Coach's Expectations: "We had a rough indoor season, and we sat down and talked to the team," head coach Jerry Clayton said. "We're try- ing to regroup and refocus." Top Athlete: Senior thrower Joe Ellis earned first-team All-America honors with a mark of 73 feet and 5.25 inches in the weight throw to finish sixth at the NCAA Indoor Championships March 8-9. "Joe has been really good as a leader," Clayton said. "He's one of the captains of the team. He's been very successful at the Big Ten and national level." Athlete To Watch: Junior Roland Amarteifio ran 7.95 in the 60-meter hurdles for sixth at the Big Ten In- door Championships, Feb. 22-23. "He's just really focused, just a su- per individual, and has been from day one when he came in," Clayton said. Don't Miss: May 10-12 at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships in Iowa City, Iowa WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD First Event: March 15-16 at the Hurricane Invitational in Miami Big Ten Predicted Finish: Sixth NCAA Best-Case Scenario: Top 50 Coach's Expectations: "We're just trying to get the end of our season behind us," head coach James Henry said. "With the weather warming up, we are ready to start performing at the level we know we're capable of." Top Athlete: Sophomore Chloe Foster ran the 400-meter leg of the sixth-place distance medley re- lay team that clocked 11:08.55 at the NCAA Indoor Championships March 8-9. On Feb. 22-23, she ran a career-best 1:30.49 in the 600-meter run for fourth at the Big Ten Indoor Championships. "For one thing, she's healthy," Henry said. "She is a hard-working young lady. She has no idea what's her ceiling is, and sometimes that's a good thing." Athlete To Watch: Junior Julia Hall ran 56.57 in the 400-meter dash to place 16th at the Big Ten Indoor Championships. "Julia is probably one of the hard- est-working young ladies on our team, and one of the issues for her is that she's not sure how to hold back," Henry said. "She thinks work- ing hard all the time is the only way, and she's maturing and starting to learn that hard work and hard rest can pay off."
