Brian Kelly's Comments: "Devin obviously at the cornerback position is a need that we have within our program. … He's an exciting player that's going to come in and compete immediately." Gonzaga Head Coach Aaron Brady Comments: "He can pretty much do anything on offense or defense. Most guys his size want to play offense, but he loves defense. He likes to come up and hit people, and he loves being out on an island to match up with the best receiver on the field. He's a very competitive guy. He plays the game hard, and he's a leader that way." Tom Lemming Of Prep Football Report: "Devin is a good, solid cover corner with good, but not great speed. He's aggressive. He's not afraid to put his nose in there and light someone up." Recruitment: Landed an offer from the Irish roughly a month before taking visits to Michigan, Wisconsin and Notre Dame in late March and made his pledge to the Irish public April 4 … Returned to South Bend in mid-June, and for the BYU and Wake Forest games … Took his first and only official visit to Notre Dame Dec. 7 for the football awards show and was hosted by junior cornerback Bennett Jackson … Primarily recruited by Scott Booker with future position coach Kerry Cooks also involved. Why He Chose Notre Dame: "I really felt comfortable with the coaching staff, the players and everyone around campus. The coaching staff doesn't only want to mold great football players, but they also want to mold great men for society away from football. … I could feel that the coaching staff cared more about just the number on my back." Jason Sapp's Scouting Report: Makes quick reads, has the confidence to play in press coverage and is a physical player in run support … Has good athletic ability and could contribute at a number of positions, but his open-field tackling makes him an early candidate for special teams … He can make plays with his hands and adds an element on turnovers. 2013 Projection: Butler is a special teams candidate and has the ability to cross-train for cornerback and safety in the Irish scheme, if needed. With that being said, he played in three postseason games in hopes of getting that much more prepared for when he gets to campus in the summer.
