With his remix of Wileys tune being championed by Annie Mac on Radio 1, this year is set to be a big one for this DJ and producer. CHARLIE | @guestlist.net I'm privileged today to be joined by the amazing Wilkinson who's been smashing it on the drum and bass scene right now. How's it going man you good? Just started creating? Yeah good man. Obviously you've come a long long way from that. Recently Annie Mac played your Wiley remix 'Reload ft. Chip' on her BBC Radio 1 show. How was that for you - How did that make you feel? Good good. I understand when you started off you were into drumming and you were in bands when you were younger, is that right? Yeah when I was about nine years old I got my first drum kit and that pretty much got me into music. From there on it was just like you know.. followed the road of making music. Nice nice, and that was the drum... where did bass come in? Probably when I was about sixteen, getting into dance music you know my brother gave me like a mix CD and just got hooked man. Listened to the whole thing and started listening to all the specific artists on the CD. Like who? Who was inspiration for you? Well High Contrast would be probably my first sort of real inspiration you know just from the music perspective and the sampling I was just like "This is nuts..." I've never really you know found out how people sampled stuff and just did my research and just really got sucked into the whole scene. Yeah exactly and then it just lead to getting addicted to producing music and then it's all like just picked up now. In terms of atmosphere and build-up throughout a night and the crowd , where would you say is the hottest place in the UK right now to perform? I don't know there's a lot, It's all changing at the moment because you've got Fabric, you know I love Fabric it's such a good vibe there and sort of feels like my home club. But there's like a Ram warehouse party in Suffolk Street in March which is this new venue everyone seems to be talking about, there's a lot of heat around it. about me and played him a load of tunes and then I just got chatting to Andy and sent him loads of tunes. Did he call you? Yeah it was a funny one it was like... I got a text at about one in the morning. Drunken text? No no no! Thats just when Andy's like some sort of nocturnal animal, you know what I mean? Haha! So he text me at like one in the morning and was like "Are you free to chat?" and I err... "It was crazy! You know I've looked up to him for so long... and I never thought he'd (Andy C) be into my music at all." Yeah it was cool man that was on Friday so yeah it was really cool just to sort of like come off the back of 'Need to Know' which was my last single. You know I did this remix for Wiley which was great and she gave it a first spin on Friday. Have you met Wiley? No not yet. We'll try and sort that out for you. Haha yeah no I really like him, I've always been a fan of his stuff. So when you met Andy C, when he first started playing your stuff worldwide, how did that make you feel? It was crazy! You know I've looked up to him for so long... and I never thought he'd be into my music at all. But yeah he heard the tunes and was just sort of like "Hit me up!" How did you meet him? Well basically I'm good mates with Cyantific and he was on a train with him as he did a show with Andy and yeah on the train back he was just chatting I think I was watching Family Guy or something... In bed.. and I was just like "What the..." I bet you thought it was one of your mates or something? Yeah! it was just yeah a pretty crazy experience... But you know it's just great working with him. And equally what was it like when he put some of your tunes on Nightlife 5? Yeah I mean that was the first step, that was great you know. Before that they brought me into the office and signed me and I was taken back by that... And then to bring me in, it was perfect they had the Nightlife albums and put three of my tunes on there and followed up by my first single. It was a pretty good way to start you know? Do you have a specific sound you're striving for? Like when you made the switch between Hospital Records to RAM Records, your sound got a little bit more aggressive - which is wicked, but are you going to keep on that progressive feel? Well I think that I just like writing all different sorts of music. I've never wanted to be pigeonholed into making a certain sound and I know I have that moonwalker sound, and occasionally I do other singles that have that same sort of deep bass, but then you know Need to Know is more musical and I love that side of drum and bass as well so, I think what I want to do really with my album is sort of represent all the sounds that I love. I've got one last question for you man. If you were put on a desert island, bottle of whiskey, one last day to live. Who would you spend that last day with? Ah I'd have to say my girlfriend, no brainer. For more information check out www.wilkinsonmusic.com
