GUESTLIST Issue 48 / 2013 www.guestlist.net 7 7 THE VILLAGE UNDERGROUND WALL East London is set to get a makeover from the world's most talented street artists this year. No longer can the elitists overlook the most dynamic and rapidly growing community in the arts world. In 2012, Dulwich Picture Gallery, the first public art gallery in the UK collaborated with world famous street artist Stik. Stik recreated seven of the most critically acclaimed paintings hung in the gallery and transplanted them in his own unique style across the walls of leafy Dulwich. This latest project, the WALL, from Street Art London shows that street art is a form of art that is very much alive as it continues to attract adventurous, talented and imaginative individuals who refuse to confine their work to designated spaces. The Village Underground WALL is a collaborative art project between Street Art London and East London's creative community Village Underground. The WALL in Shoreditch features work from the world's best street artists throughout 2013. Street Art London and Village Underground aim to make the WALL the most prestigious street art wall in the world and a cultural landmark of London. The first artwork currently on display is from outstanding Sheffield street artist Phlegm. Phlegm started his career as an illustrator and his street art captures the fantasy world of books in a way that has never been seen before. His current design of the wall, pictured here, was inspired by a scene from the brilliant childhood classic, Where The Wild Things Are. This is more than just a well painted wall. The WALL is a statement that challenges how we think of art and our cities. And of course it is a pretty damn cool wall too. To keep up with what's happening with the wall follow @StreetArtLondon and make sure you get yourself down to Shoreditch to see it for yourself.
