baseball opens 2013 with weekend split BY BRANDAN ALFORD BrandanAlford@Gmail.com began its season PurdueasbaseballthewithTen/Big East this past weekend four games in Florida part of Big Challenge. The Boilers were a part of a few high-scoring affairs and split the four-game weekend with a pair of wins over Connecticut. The Boilers (2-2) opened with the Huskies on Friday, jumping out to an early lead before holding on for an 11-8 victory. Purdue then dropped a one- sided result to South Florida 20-2 Saturday. Jake Hansen No. 4 Louisville handed the Boilers another loss with a 9-4 decision Sunday before Purdue rebounded later in the day to score another win over Connecticut by a final score of 5-3. Purdue got big offensive weekends from a trio of players who weren���t major contributors a year ago. The Boilers were led by freshman Josh Estill, who was comfortable in his first collegiate action. Estill batted .467 Olympic Sports Player-of-the-Week: josh estilL Freshman Josh Estill wasted no time in his first weekend of collegiate action, pacing Purdue���s offensive efforts in the Big Ten/Big East Challenge. Estill batted .467 in the four games, scoring one run and driving in another. He hit safely in all four games while splitting time between designated hitter, catcher and first base. The Carlsbad, Calif., native posted a .529 on-base percentage and didn���t have an error in 14 chances in the field. for the weekend, hitting safely in all sion to Arizona.
