8 SPRING 2019 Nancy Berry, Editor P.S. If you have a home design or landscape project that you would like to share, send me an email at nberry@nshoremag.com. A S I BEGIN TO WRITE THIS EDITOR'S LETTER, SIZABLE snowflakes are rapidly falling outside my bedroom window, layering yet another blanket of white on top of the already deep snow. It's March 10 and I am hopeful that with the spring equinox just around the corner, blossoms and buds will soon begin to awaken this dormant North Shore landscape. In many ways this issue celebrates how our land- scapes can be transformed to become extensions of our homes—truly extending our living spaces when the weather warms. One such example is in the work of landscape design- er Hilarie Holdsworth who creates breathtaking gardens at her West Gloucester home. The property consists of 3.5 acres of wooded and open landscape dominated by an 18th-century reclaimed Maine barn. Holdsworth has developed the gardens over a period of 20 years, and they have become a colorful array of garden rooms for Holdsworth and her husband, Eric, to enjoy throughout the spring, summer, and fall. In Newburyport, Lloyd Fleischer Landscape Design creates an outdoor garden oasis on a tight, narrow in- town lot. The designers were able to create a feeling of expanse from inside the house with views of neighbor- ing trees, a church steeple, and a slice of sky. The living space is extended to a clamshell terrace that offers an artistic firepit for chilly nights. Beth Welch and Chuck Christensen purchased a Victorian in Newbury and set about creating a kind of open-air art museum with a series of gardens. Their col- lection of whimsical sculptures and found art objects— many from Todd's Farm—offers an abundance of focal points as well as conversation pieces for the couple and their guests. These are just a few of the stories in this issue that celebrate the North Shore's gardens and landscapes bursting onto the scene this season. We hope they offer ideas and inspiration for your own landscapes and garden designs. We also invite you join Northshore Home in partnership with Boston Design Week April 3, as we host a lively panel discussion on home trends, followed by cocktails and small bites at The Mansion at Turner Hill in Ipswich, in celebration of our spring issue!
