101 Photographer Photographer Larry Dunn, who worked in retail for most of his career, caught the shutter bug as a young boy when his father taught him how to shoot film, and develop and print it in his Cincinnati home darkroom. "He taught me the mechanics of photography, including composition and how to frame," says Dunn, who favors shooting buildings and cars. "I like their form, shape, and texture, and how the light plays on the shapes and volumes." For many years, Dunn used a film camera, but he eventually switched to digital and taught himself Photoshop. "Ninety-five percent of my work is black and white, but I will do some color if I feel it's important or necessary," says Dunn, who's used color to shoot close-ups of flora, fauna, and vintage cars. anks to a recent course exploring the artistic side of photography, Dunn has forced himself to slow down, study a scene, and become more deliberate about what he's photographing. "I've also come to appreciate the fine art side of photography," he says—to go beyond the particular image and think about the emotional impact it has on the viewer. BEST ARTIST ADVICE: "Why do it? It's from a Ben & Jerry's bumper sticker : 'If it's not fun why do it?'" Photographer Larry Dunn works mainly in black and white. Come Join a Class!
