Oftentimes during harvest, not all of the potatoes are desirable, and the discarded potatoes are placed into a cull pile. If cull piles are not destroyed, diseases such as late blight may overwinter in the pile and pose a risk to the following year's crop. RESISTANCE MANAGEMENT BEST PRACTICES In addition to following the right cultural practices, growers should follow practices to optimize the efficacy of the crop protection products they use. One common method of doing so is through resistance management for all products, including herbicides, fungicides and insecticides. "Resistance management is essential for sustainable pest control," says Rainbolt. "It's not easy for growers to do, but it provides them with more products to use if those products continue to work without building resistance." Rainbolt recommends keeping very detailed records of what products are being applied to what fields, and at which times during the season. Within these records, growers should note the HRAC, FRAC and IRAC site of action numbers of the products being used. "Keeping records helps make sure growers are not relying too heavily on just one site of action throughout the course of the season," says Rainbolt. "This can make a big difference as far as stewardship for crop protection products goes." Depending on geography, a grower may make multiple applications in one season for a particular disease. In the region Rainbolt services in Idaho, growers will often make multiple applications to control early blight. When making numerous applications during a season, he advises using products with different FRAC codes as to not rely on a single site of action. "A fungicide we recommend for control of early blight is Endura fungicide," Rainbolt says. "Although this product provides effective control of early blight, growers should use tank-mixes of protectants like chlorothalonil or mancozeb-based fungicides with Endura to further manage fungicide resistance development." Another step growers can take is to properly calibrate their applicators. Doing so can help ensure they are applying exactly the amount of product they want. This also helps growers determine whether they are using adequate water to get good coverage of the product they are spraying, and ultimately allows better disease, weed or insect control. PRESERVING LAND FOR YEARS TO COME For growers looking for information on stewardship best practices, a great place to start is their respective states' extension services. These organizations often offer access to tools and resources that help growers practice good stewardship, such as soil sampling. Without practicing proper stewardship, growers may not be able to sustain their potato-growing operations. "Land is a limited resource, especially land that's well suited for agriculture," says Rainbolt. "As growers look to produce food for the future, practicing good stewardship will be essential to making sure the land we have is productive for a long time to come."
