MAY 2019 THE WOLVERINE 63 BY AUSTIN FOX O n April 23, the Seattle Seahawks traded star defensive end Frank Clark to the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for a first-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft plus a swap of third- round picks and a second-round se- lection in 2020. Clark cashed in financially in a big way with his new club, signing a five-year contract worth $105.5 mil- lion ($63.5 million guaranteed). The 25-year-old spent his first four seasons in the league with the Se- ahawks and is coming off a career- high 13-sack campaign in 2018, which led to the club placing their franchise tag on him in March. Clark racked up 35 total sacks dur- ing his time in Seattle (including at least nine each of the last three years) after the organization selected him out of Michigan in the second round of the 2015 NFL Draft. "A trade of this magnitude is not done unless it's for an elite player," Kansas City general manager Brett Veach explained. "Frank is certainly an elite player. Over the last four years, he's proven to be one of the very best pass rushers in the NFL, and is also a great run defender and just an overall disruptive player." "I want to win some champion- ships," the new Chief defensive end said in his introductory press conference. "I want to go to heights I've never been before, like the ones I dream about. I feel like I bring a unique set of abilities, along with the type of attitude and swagger every coach loves — I think it's infectious. "It's not just about individual stats, because when you can contribute in a way that helps out players on your team, that's when you're really doing your job."
