{ 6 SUMMER TO-DOS } 6 Summer To-Dos Quick tips to help you make the most of your sunny season 1 Take on the Trails This idea is for runners unafraid to muddy up their pods and jaunt across uneven terrain. It requires running, but more importantly, it calls for strategic placement of your steps and working those runner muscles in slightly new ways. Thinking about your route of travel is (like casting a fly or working on a dance move) a good distraction from the intensity and burn on your muscles. Running flat surfaces works certain mus- cles in particular ways. That all changes when you sprint across the rock-studded cross slopes of a mountain trail. Doing both gives you a comprehensive workout. Bring a friend to run the trail with you and keep you safe. Best bet—the Snake River Mountain Bike Club. Google it. 2 Fly Cast from a Float Tube It’s simple to do, damnably difficult to do well. With your wader-wrapped legs extended down in the water, the motion is like bike pedaling, but in reverse. The fly— usually a minnow or leach—trails in front of you as you tow it around the lake. Lose five pounds and haul in a five-poun- der. Could life be any better? 48 | EAST IDAHO SUMMER FUN GUIDE 2010 In a word—anticipation. Waiting for the strike takes your mind off the strenuous motion, give you far more mental bang for the buck. For starters, call BS flies at 208-390-2177 or Premier Fly Fishing at 208-652-7349. Both are good bets for buying the whole package—waders, float tube and all the fly gear if you don’t already have it. 3 Go Geo-Caching It’s a fast growing activity for anyone with an interest in high-tech treasu- re-hunting. Geo-cache adventures, based on the use of GPS units, can lead you deep into the East Idaho backcountry or no farther than a non-descript shrub on the east end of BYUI campus. There are about 800,000 cache sites around the world, and at least 300 or so right around Idaho Falls. Find out everything you need to know at geocaching. com. 4 Go RVing Why: Simply, because you can. Camping out is an American tradition that speaks volumes about the freedom we have to willfully leave our homes for a time-span of our choosing, reside out in nature, and return home. Oh, and there’s also the fact that we live smack dab in the middle of the prettiest natural wonderland on the planet. As you might expect, there are several reputable RV dealerships to get you going. 5 Flood of Foot Traffic On June 12, runners from all over the country will be participating in the Teton Dam Marathon. You can pick one of six different races, featuring a full-mara- thon, marathon-relay, half-marathon, 10K, 5K, or a one-mile fun run, which takes place every year around the anniversary of the breaking of the Teton Dam. Vendor booths will be set up in Smith Park. Log onto dam- marathon.com for details. 6 It’s Up in the Air Got a fear of heights? We can fix that. The Teton Valley Summer Festival takes off July 1–4. It features air balloons in a rally overlooking the majestic Grand Teton Mountain Range. You can enjoy three full days of balloon rides, games, 4th of July parade, rodeo action, bike races, a fiddler’s contest and a craft and antique fair. Glider rides and balloon flights are available. Visit www.tetonvalleychamber.com for details.
