{ 5 GREAT DAY TRIP S } 5 Great Day Trips Looking for a short jaunt to add some spice to your summer? We’ve got a list. 1 Water, Meet Gravity Beginning in Ashton, the 28-mile Mesa Falls Scenic Byway winds past the cradle of Idaho’s rich potato-bearing soils, through a series of beautiful upland mead- ows and into the pristine wilderness of the Grand Targhee National Forest. Then of course there are the Falls themselves—both viewable from observation points right off the road. The traffic is light, and scenery is to die for. If you prefer a little more rough- and-tumble experience, bypass the turnoff and take the first right past the Highway 20 bridge. This road, like the highway, will lead you into the Warm River recreational area, but from an entirely different perspec- tive. 2 All You Can Bear Once upon a time, up in the Park, you could feed bears right from your vehicle. Those days are gone, thankfully, but the spirit of car-based wildlife viewing is alive and well at Bear World, just a short drive south of Rexburg. In addition to the bears, you can also see an assortment of 50 | EAST IDAHO SUMMER FUN GUIDE 2010 other wildlife and enjoy a variety of interac- tive activities for the whole fam. The facility is open all summer. Head down Hwy. 20 toward Lorenzo and take a right. It’s hard to miss! 3 Meet Your Dune Miles and miles of sand piled in rolling hills and crested dunes make up the outdoor playground of the St. Anthony sand dunes, located just 10 miles west of the town of St. Anthony. The dunes are literally a dirt bike and ATV harbor. Most people park at the Egin Lakes Access area, which puts them in the middle of the 30-mile strip. The big dunes are to the west, smaller dunes to the east. A prime camping spot, the Egin Lakes area is jam- packed every Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Labor Day weekend. 4 Spring into Action Heise’s famous hot springs are actually just one of many reasons to visit this pleasant Idaho Falls bedroom commu- nity. Great lodging, a quaint golf course and beautiful scenery will also get you hooked. For over 100 years, the family-owned Heise Resort has set traditions of excellence which has kept customers returning. Contact the resort at heise@srv.net. 5 Remember that Day in June The Upper Snake River Valley Historical Society Museum in Rexburg is aptly named the Teton Flood Museum because of its extensive collections of flood memorabilia, including but not limited to films, photos, and other items related to the Teton Dam disaster. The upstairs of this building is used as a civic auditorium which seats 1,000 people and is well known for its excellent acoustics. There are many pioneer relics, depicting the lives of early pioneers, an Idaho opal/agate collection, North American animal head collection, World War I and II items and much more.
