Harris Publishing’s offices are based here, after all, and the local courses are ones we know all too well. But even after playing course after course throughout the region, we still find it amazing what’s available to us right out our back door. Idaho Falls has three 18-hole city cours- es—all of championship caliber. That alone is a rarity, especially for a town of 50,000 people. The golf is cheap, too. A season pass to play all three—Pinecrest, Sand Creek and Sage Lakes—is just a measly $534. All things considered, this could very well be best golf-pass deal in the entire Mountain West. Pinecrest is a breathtaking tree-filled par-70 layout that is steeped in the his- tory and culture of the Upper Snake River Just Time for Nine Half the course, half the time, all the fun… Ponderosa 208-679-5730 Lava Hot Springs 208-776-5048 American Falls Golf Course 208-226-5827 Valley. It naturally gets most of the traffic, so calling two days in advance is highly recommended. In addition to its numerous doglegs, rolling fairways and small well- defined greens, the course has a surprising amount of sand. ) Often, however, the greenside traps act as a buffer to keep your wayward shots from rolling into the trees.) Pinecrest is a regular host of the Idaho Mens’ Amateur, as well as regional profes- sional competition and—on occasion— national junior events. Sand Creek, situated on the south side of Idaho Falls, is well named for its neighboring sand dune but not for any beachfront property of its own. Of the three layouts, this one is arguably the easiest. It gets a heavy amount of traffic but responds well with its large undulating greens. It was built in 1978 and designed by William P. Bell and Sons. William Bengevfield, Western Director of the USGA’s Green Section noted that “the rolling sand dunes, the abundance of water, the excellent soils and the proximity to town and tourists alike, make Sandcreek one of the poten- tially great golf courses in the West.” The addition of a five-hole short course adjacent to the regulation course attracts hundreds of junior and adults each season. Sage Lakes was built in 1992. William Howard Neff designed the course, which can play horrendously long from the back tees. Several water hazards dot the course, and greenside bunkers have been added to a number of holes in recent years. The course includes multiple tee boxes which varies the yardage from 5000 to 6800-plus yards. The greens are moderately con- toured and medium in size. Warning: When the wind blows, it can be a real bear to play.
