{ EDITOR’S NOTE } Publisher Jason Harris The Rewards of Summer As we’ve opined aplenty in past issues of our parent publication, Idaho Falls maga- zine, it takes a special kind of person to call East Idaho home. Regardless of your cultural affections, spectator-sport interests or dining preferences, you’ve got to brave the winters to make it here. Period. For some former residents, that fact has been just enough to send them packing. Six-foot drifts? Sub-Arctic temperatures? Blistering wind-chill? Strips of icy tundra that you call roads? Forget it. The “cold” truth is that it does get cold here. Very cold. That simple fact just doesn’t sit well with most fair-weather fans. But here’s what happens. They end up relocating some- where “warmer.” They get acclimated. Before they know it, they’re fishing for their ear muffs when the mercury drops below room temperature. I’ll never forget the day my brother returned from a two-year stay in Hawaii. He got off the plane and immediately donned a sweater. It was the middle of June. I razzed him about it, of course. A couple of months later, I asked him if he was looking forward to elk season up in mountains above Howe. Long before the first snowflake hit the ground, he was on a plane back to Hawaii. Aloha, Bro. Personally, I have come to embrace the advances of winter. But even if that were not the case, I would still endure it. I would endure it because after living here for the past 18 years, I know what’s coming. Few pockets of the American landscape can boast such a jam-packed, almost frenetic schedule of festivals, concerts, parades and attractions that dot the calendar from Memorial Day to Labor Day. This guide is our attempt to corral it all and offer you a way to make the most of the days that lie ahead. As you flip through the pages of this publication, keep your eyes peeled for the special play button icons. Online, these markers will be linked to our web galleries, a wide-screen movie frame and other features. All you have to do is kick back and start clicking. Now matter how we present it, East Idaho is a region defined by its calendar. And while much of that schedule is shrouded in snow, a slice of summer (sometimes a big slice; some- times just a thin sliver) is truly something to cherish. Now, put away those ear muffs.
