DEANGELO YANCEY DAVID YANCEY Wide Receiver 6-2, 200 Running Back 5-10, 205 T he early commitment and midyear enrollee considers himself an extremely versatile running back. His new coaches agree. He has so many positives, Williams, the running backs coach, said. He has great speed and runs extremely physical. But hes extremely smart and understands the game, which helps a lot when it comes to pass protection; it will pay dividends for him down the road. Hes kind of a jack of all trades. The Rivals.com three-star running back was a dominant player as a senior at Lake Central in Northwest Indiana before his senior season was ended prematurely by a knee injury. Most of that damage he ran for 17 touchdowns and almost 1,200 yards when healthy was done at running back. But as a junior, and in certain situations as a senior, he played quarterback. He thinks that experience might help him from a leadership perspective. Ive actually played quarterback for the majority of my life, Yancey said. I was always a quarterback who gets the ball and just runs all the time. In high school, I was looking forward to playing running back all four years, but I ended up going back to quarterback because one of our quarterbacks didnt play his senior year, so I stepped up at quarterback for my junior and senior year. It went pretty well for me. But Purdue recruited me as a running back, so Im at running back now. For more on Yancey, see Page 27. T he Atlanta Mays High School receiver was committed to Kentucky through its coaching change. Once he opened up, Purdue was right there waiting, getting him on campus and scoring a commitment quickly. In the 6-2, 200-pound receiver, Purdue feels it has a big-play-type threat. This kid has a lot, a lot of upside, Sherman said. I really like what hes all about. He has some big hands on him. Hes another guy who can take it a long way, with good explosion. He has good size and I like his physical presence. He can pluck the ball out of the sky and make something happen. DeAngelo Yancey said his strength as a receiver is his ability to go up and get it. The Rivals.com three-star recruit scored eight touchdowns off just 29 catches as a senior. They said they wanted a bigger receiver, for one thing, and they said they thought I could come in and be a playmaker, he said. They told me Im coming in with a good shot to play early, and itll be up to me whether I do or not. He chose Purdue over Missouri, North Carolina State and Wake Forest, among others, after de-committing from Kentucky. j Ziccarelli Builders, Inc.
